Functional Literacy Course

Purpose: This course is intended to develop functional reading and writing skills in adults with developmental disabilities. Class will be held once a week for 10 weeks.

Focus: The course will focus on teaching basic reading and writing skills so these adults can become active participants in the literate community and also be able to write down their personal information when needed. This will enhance their everyday life by enhancing functional communication skills.

Course Description: This course is aimed at providing functional reading and writing skills using a multi-media approach. Each individual participating will be able to:

• Read signs in the community such as Exit, Open, Restrooms, etc.
• Write basic information such as name and telephone number independently.
• Respond to written questions with one-word responses.
• Read the daily newspaper to keep up with individual interests.
• Complete a job application form.

Criteria: Ten individuals who demonstrate literacy skills ranging from being able to read but not comprehend the information to those who are unable to recognize any letter, words or numbers and are eager to participate in the literate world.
